Films that twist Or Change The Plot at The End

Fall (Grace Caroline Currey, Virginia Gardner)

This week’s list ties in with the other new release Fall. In this film, near the end there is a twist which we won’t spoil . It does change things for our protagonist. Below is a list of films that the last scene changes their plot changes or has an unexpected twist. As like every list it’s only a selection of films and it’s not in any particular order. Please not there potentially be some spoilers…

Gone Girl (204)

David Fincher’s Noir inspired mystery starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike. Based on Gillian Flynn‘s novel, Affleck plays teacher Nick who reports his wife Amy has went missing on their 5th Anniversary. Media attention grows as the police fail to find Amy, they do find evidence Nick is having an affair with one of his students. Evidence builds like a journal Amy kept, which had incriminating evidence of what Nick was doing to her and one day he might kill her.

The Twist….Amy is still alive! She’s also a sociopath!

The others (2001)

Alejandro Amenábar’s film is very underrated. It’s possibly better than the so called Sixth Sense ending . An atmospheric supernatural thriller set in a foggy English estate starring Nicole Kidman with her kids a housekeeper looking after the home that is haunted by who? All is revealed at Seance scene in the film and when it arrives it’s devastating.

Parasite (2019)

Bong Joon-Ho’s Oscar winning social satire film plays along like a darkly comedic film until the last act of the film. To something chilling, despairing and shocking. The reveal still plays off the the widening wealth gap and class divide Korea (and all the world) all facing. A story of the working class Kim family who all con their way into working in the Park family residence. They even push out the housekeeper who had been there for decades, only for her to return and surprise the Kim family and reveal what’s hiding in the bunker under the house.

American Psycho (2000)

Christian Bale is Patrick Bateman in the film adaptation of the cult  Bret Easton Ellis‘ 1991 book, which is equally now a cult film. Bateman is a sociopathic killing investment banker who lacks remorse living a dual life. He is part of New York’s high society, killing prostitutes, homeless. By the end you are left wondering who was killed? Did anyone Bateman ‘Kill’ dead?

Memento (2000)

When it comes to plot changes and twists, Christopher Nolan likes to have them in his films. This brilliant film starring Guy Pearce is made for those twists. His character Leonard Shelby is unreliable as our narrator as we watch a film told backwards. Leonard is a man with a condition that makes it hard for him to remember what recent things . He takes notes, pictures even tattoos all with clues for him to remember one thing. Who killed his wife? He searches high and low for John G, Leonard is easily manipulated thanks to his condition. Is his own backstory a lie or is he been manipulated and set up?

The Prestige (2004)

Another Nolan film and one with some clever twists and changes especially the ending. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are magicians in competition to be recognised as London’s best. It’s a duel could it be to the ‘death’? It’s a thrilling journey as both try to master the ‘transported man’ trick with Bale’s character seems to be winning. How? Fantastic performances also from Michael Caine and David Bowie as Nikola Telsa.

Shutter Island (2006)

Martin Scorsese’s Noir inspired 50’s Mystery crime Thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. The pair head to Shutter Island to the mental hospital find missing patient Rachel who had been a patient at the hospital. Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) has an ulterior motive to find Andrew Laeddis. A series of conflicting events and appearances make Teddy head to the islands Lighthouse. Things get creepy leading to find who and where Andrew Laeddis is.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

Bryan Singer’s mystery crime thriller has one of the best twists in film history. A heist gone wrong with Roger Kint (Kevin Spacey) the survivor who is interrogated. Through flashbacks we learn about what went wrong but who is there mysterious leader Keyser Soze?
