THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE DRAMA, THRILLER
Classic suspenseful Cold War thriller, a dissection of modern day politics and paranoia . Raymond Shaw, a decorated Korean War hero, returns home to the arms of his overprotective mother and his politically ambitious stepfather. Rejecting their welcome, he takes employment with a politically rival newspaper.
Meanwhile, his fellow platoon members are troubled with nightmarish recurring dreams, including Major Bennett Marco, who is convinced that all is not what it seems.
KICK-ASS ACTION, CRIME, COMEDY
Silly adult fun, which in a way is a satirical kick in the baws at the super hero films. This goes where the MCU dare go to not just in violence but also in tone and language. High-schooler Dave decides to be a costumed crime fighter, but gets mixed up in a caped vigilante’s violent vendetta against crime lord Frank D’Amico.
If easily offended maybe don’t watch, oh there is another vintage Nic Cage performance too!
EFFIE GRAY DRAMA, ROMANCE
A film with plenty of character, a film for those want something slowly paced. When young Effie Gray becomes the wife of John Ruskin, one of the most distinguished writers and critics of the day, who has known her since her childhood, it soon becomes apparent that Ruskin regards her as a muse rather than a wife, and the stifling atmosphere of their home and Ruskin’s overbearing wealthy parents soon take a toll on Effie’s health.
A trip back to Scotland for Ruskin to have his portrait painted by his protege John Everett Millais increases the distance between husband and wife, but the sympathy shown by Millais begins to offer her a release.
THE WIFE DRAMA
A study of long relationships and how we can hurt ourselves as well as heal, another magnificent performance from Glen Close.
Successful writer Joe Castleman is delighted to receive an early morning telephone call from Sweden informing him that he has won this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature. His steadfast wife Joan is equally delighted, but as she prepares to travel to Stockholm to support and encourage her husband, she reflects on her life from when she first met Joe, her married literature tutor with whom she embarks on the affair which would change the course of their lives.
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON WESTERN
In the second in John Ford’s cavalry trilogy, a US cavalry officer suffers a setback on his last mission and is ‘retired’ before he can take further action. To avert a full-scale war, he decides to act alone. Visually gorgeous which won the Oscar for best photography in 1950. Also considered one of John Wayne’s best emotional performances in a film with a anti-war message.
The above descriptions are all taken (or partly) from the description at BBC iPlayer | Some of the above films may only be available for a short time.
